Flora Huizar

MSN, APRN, PMHNP-BC

Flora Huizar is proud of her Hispanic heritage and comes from a loving, supportive family. Growing up in a military household gave her the unique experience of living in different places before settling in Wichita Falls as a teenager. The city quickly became her home, and over the years she has developed a deep love for the community. From an early age, Flora knew she wanted to help others with their mental health, and that passion has guided her career.

Her journey in the field began as a Psychiatric Nursing Assistant at North Texas State Hospital while she pursued her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. There she witnessed firsthand how mental health disorders affected people of all ages and backgrounds, which confirmed she was in the right field and gave her a deeper understanding of the importance of mental health care.

After graduation, Flora transitioned to outpatient intensive services at Helen Farabee MHMR. In this role she supported patients at high risk of hospitalization and mental health crises, connecting them with essential mental health services and community resources. This experience highlighted the many ways mental health impacts all areas of life.

Flora went on to work alongside experienced psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners, which inspired her to pursue her own path as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. She also worked as an Intensive Care Unit nurse, applying her mental health background in a critical care setting to support patients and families during some of their most difficult moments.

Having worked in both inpatient and outpatient settings, Flora quickly recognized the need for more mental health resources in the community, particularly when it comes to medication management that supports not only physical health but also emotional and social well-being. This realization continues to motivate her to provide more comprehensive and compassionate care.

What Flora finds most fulfilling in her work is building connections with patients across all stages of life. She is dedicated to understanding each person’s unique challenges and approaches every relationship with empathy, respect, and a commitment to long-term health.

Outside of her professional role, Flora enjoys spending time with her daughter and their pets, reading a good book with a warm cup of coffee, and savoring her husband’s latest culinary creations.
